When you imagine searching for orang-utans in Borneo, you’re probably picturing yourself trekking through the rainforest. Scanning the trees above for that little bit of movement in the canopy.
But can I tell you something you may not know?
If you choose your destination correctly, your Borneo rainforest experience isn’t limited to the daytime. Choose the right spot and you can experience something magical… a Borneo night safari.
One destination where this is definitely an option is the Kinabatangan River.
There are a number of advantages (and a couple of disadvantages) to staying in one of the luxury lodges on the Kinabatangan River. However, arguably the major plus is the night safari.
We chose Sukau Rainforest Lodge, a beautiful lodge on the river. After dinner each evening you can choose to do a night trip out on the boat. Leaving directly from the lodge jetty. Your guides will cruise slowly up the river while swinging a torch from side to side. It is incredible to watch them spot wildlife from 50m away using this method. I guarantee you won’t see anything until it’s about 2m away.
You will see plenty of birdlife, such as kingfishers, far closer than you could ever get during the day. We were also fortunate enough to see snakes, baby crocodiles, monitor lizards and proboscis monkeys.
It is a completely different atmosphere to your day trips and a must see on your visit to Borneo.
