Kinabatangan River – Part 1

We arranged a 3 day/2 night Kinabatangan river safari through Sukau Rainforest Lodge. Sukau lodge is located a couple of hours boat ride from downtown Sandakan, so after arriving in the city we were taken down to the boat jetty in order to begin our journey.

It was from here we would set off up the river in a comfortable high speed boat. The tour really begins as soon as you enter the river estuary so keep your eyes out for animals along the way.

Before we had even reached our lodge we had seen crocodiles, monitor lizards, proboscis monkeys and more birdlife than we could possibly remember.

The last few days of our Sandakan river tour were equally as spectacular as the first. It is amazing to think so much unique wildlife is found in this area. With palm oil plantations encroaching more and more on their habitat, these animals are going to find it harder and harder to thrive.

Check out the Proboscis monkeys and hornbills among others in our photos below.
