Four hours bus ride south of Lima, the Paracas peninsula is home to the Paracas National Reserve and is stopping off point for trip to Islas Ballestas.

The reserve itself is something very special and is home to an amazing variety of wildlife species, particularly birds. The highlights of the reserve have to be the large flamingo colony and the incredible coastal rock formations.

From Paracas it is only a short boat trip out to the Ballestas Islands where the bird life is something to behold. While the reserve may not be the first item on your Peru itinerary we would definitely recommend making the effort to include it on your trip. Add in the Inca Trail and the magnificent city of Cusco and you have the makings of a real Bucket List adventure.
