Rio de Janeiro; one of the world’s most beautiful cities and home to some of the most iconic sites on the planet.
Whatever you like doing there is something for everyone. You can spend your days relaxing on the world famous Ipenema or Copacabana beach, take a trip up to meet Christ the Redeemer and even see a game of football at the Maracana.
Our top things to do in Rio:
No trip to Rio is complete without a visit to the Corcovado statue high above the city, it is here you can check out the best views of Rio. Carry on to the charming Santa Teresa district, visit the surrounding beautiful waterfalls before finishing at Sugar loaf mountain for an incredible sunset. You can take the cable car to the top of sugar loaf but many actually walk up.
Explore the botanical gardens and take in a football game at the incredible Maracanã stadium, (we saw Fluminense playing Nautico in the Copa Libatadores). If you are feeling a little adventurous have an amazing night out at the Lapa street party. It’s not for the faint hearted, we saw police shoot at drug dealers and favela kids overdosing on the pavement.
We recommend staying at Hostel Harmonia in the Ipenema district of Rio. The hostel is 2 blocks from Ipenema beach, tucked away in a private laneway, with fantastic restaurants and bars on the doorstep.
After Rio travel to Ilha Grande, 2 hours south of Rio. We took private transfer arranged by our Ilha Grande accommodation which involved a minibus and speed boat over to the Island. It is possible to take public busses and the public ferry for those on a tight budget.
