We visited Boulders Beach, near Cape Town, as it is one of the best places in the world to swim with penguins. However, for those who don’t fancy getting in the water it is still a brilliant colony to visit. With excellent boardwalks and informative signage it makes for an excellent day trip from Cape Town. Either drive yourself, take the train or join one of the many tours which stop by the colony each day. With only around 25,000 breeding pairs of African penguins (formerly known as Jackass penguins due to the amazing noise they make) left in the wild there are few better places to sight them. They live at the beach all year round but a trip in summer is recommended so you can really enjoy the beach too.
